We just released a redesigned version of our 8.5′×40′, 16K GVWR Non-CDL Hotshot Special — a 40-foot gooseneck deck-over flatbed built for operators who want into hotshot hauling without the burden of a commercial driver’s license.

The non-CDL question comes down to one number: 26,001 pounds of combined GVWR, truck plus trailer. Here’s what catches a lot of operators at the scale house — DOT goes by the GVWR ratings on your truck’s door jamb and your trailer’s plate, not the actual weight on the scale. Cross that combined line on paper and you need a Class A CDL, even running empty. We engineered this trailer to sit right at that line, so you can run a full 40-foot deck-over and stay legal without the license.

The redesign came straight out of customer feedback and nearly three decades building for hotshot operators. Every reinforcement and component was chosen to maximize durability while protecting the highest practical legal payload — a net payload capacity of 8,180 pounds on a trailer built to take daily commercial use.

What comes standard:

  • 12″ I-beam main frame and gooseneck
  • Dual 8,000-lb. axles with all-wheel electric brakes
  • Upgraded 20K-rated heavy-duty suspension
  • 17.5″ 16-ply tires with a matching mounted spare
  • Dual 12,000-lb. spring-loaded drop-leg jacks
  • USA-made sealed wiring harness with recessed LED lighting
  • Lockable diamond-plate chain box in the gooseneck

It ships standard as a 40-foot flat deck with 8-foot steel slide-in ramps, and is also available in a dovetail configuration with spring-assisted, deck-level ramps. You can see how it stacks up against the rest of our gooseneck and bumper-pull flatbed trailers on the flatbed lineup page.

A note on that payload number: some trailers out there advertise a higher rating. But those gains usually come straight out of structural integrity and long-term durability. We’ve spent thirty years watching what happens when a trailer gets pushed past what it’s built to handle, so we built this one for the balance between payload and longevity — not the biggest number on a spec sheet.

“A lot of guys want to get into hotshot work without the need to obtain a commercial driver’s license.” said Devin Davis, Chief Sales Officer at Texas Pride Trailers. “The catch is that DOT reads the stickers, not the scale. We built this one to sit right under that 26,001-pound limit, so an operator can run a real 40-foot deck-over, haul over 8,000 pounds, and stay legal without the CDL. And we didn’t chase the biggest payload number we could print — we built it to hold up.”
